Prachuap Khiri Khan villagers urge ban on comb pen shell fishery

No comments :
Local fishermen and environmentalists gathered at the City Hall of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province to urge their governor to disallow the fishing of comb pen shells, known as hoi jorp. The villagers, armed with banners denouncing the fishing of comb pen shells, demanded that related agencies help solve their hardships by imposing a ban on comb pen shell hunt which is posing a threat to the environment and their livelihood.
Local fishermen in Prachuap Khiri Khan are demanding the province ban bottom-trawling for comb pen shell molluscs.
They said hundreds of fishermen from nearby provinces did cause extensive damage to the marine conservation zone by digging up comb pen shells which live in sand. More than 180 fishing boats from other provinces such as Trat, Phetchaburi and Samut Sakhon were working in the Prachuap Khiri Khan area and were illegally bottom-trawling, a method that destroys the marine ecology.

These boats were harvesting comb pen shells just 500 metres to one kilometre off-shore in an area stretching from Pranburi to Sam Roi Yod, Ban Pak Klong Klieo, Pho Rieng, Bo Nok and Thung Noi. They were working inside the five nautical-mile conservation zone declared by the province, Piya Thetyeam, president of Thung Noi Local Fishery Association, said.

He said an important issue was that these fishermen took only the muscle-meat and tossed the remaining flesh and the shells back into the sea. The decomposing flesh generated gas under the water and the discarded shells damaged the equipment local fishermen used to catch other types of marine life.

Mr Piya said the harvesting of comb pen shells had created conflict in the community and local fishermen had agreed to seek assistance from provincial authorities. They wanted this activity banned and steps and steps taken to ensure the sustainable collection of the popular, tasty molluscs.
