Award for Trash Hero Thailand

On behalf of every volunteer, sponsor and supporter who has joined the efforts over the last two years, Trash Hero Thailand has been honored and excited to have received a very prestigious award from Protection Area Regional Office 5 of Thailand’s National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department.

The inscription on the plaque, which was presented by Region 5 Director Mr. Jirasak Chukwamdee, reads: The Protected Area Regional Office 5 (Nakhorn Sri Thammarat) would like to present this plaque to honor Trash Hero Thailand, who has continuously been supporting conservation of natural resources. This plaque represents great admiration and may you keep this good reputation always.

“This award is very special to us,” said Trash Hero Thailand Organizer Phittayakorn Rattanasuwan. “We are so fortunate to work with the various regions of the National Park, the Royal Thai Navy, the Royal Thai Police, and many others. Their support has been so valuable to our efforts. This award from Regional Office 5 makes us feel very proud.”

Since the project’s start in December 2013, there have been 235 cleanups, where 4,810 volunteers from all over the world have removed more than 95,000 kilograms of trash.

There are now sixteen official Trash Hero chapters, each of which conducts weekly cleanups around area beaches and parks in Thailand and Indonesia. Each month, new chapters are being organized by locals and foreigners, who work together to protect and preserve our precious natural resources.

In addition to removing trash, Trash Hero Thailand has a reusable Water Bottle Project aimed at reducing the number of plastic bottles that are used and thrown away. Under the Water Bottle Project, local businesses sell reusable stainless steel water bottles that can be refilled for free at any participating business throughout Thailand.

So far on the island of Koh Lipe alone, more than 6,000 bottles have been sold in the last seven months, which, with estimated refill rates, represents hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles that will not be used on Koh Lipe in 2015.
